Journey example

Abandoned cart recovery journey on WhatsApp

The three-step cart recovery ladder as it ships: what fires it, how long each gap is, which Meta template category each send uses, and what the whole sequence costs per cart.

An isometric scene: a phone showing chat bubbles, a shop checkout counter to one side, and a shopping cart stopped on a winding path that curves back toward the counter.

A WhatsApp abandoned cart journey fires when Shopify marks a checkout abandoned, then sends up to three reminders carrying the product image, the ₹ total and a link back to the same checkout. In TopEdge it is three templates on one trigger, with the customer dropping out of the sequence the moment they pay or reply.

Shopify event

abandoned_cart

Shopify counts a checkout abandoned once it has been incomplete for more than ten minutes after the customer gave an email or phone number.

  1. within 30 to 60 minutes

Reminder one: the cart is still here

    Marketing · ₹0.8631

Product image, the item and its ₹ total, a Buy now button back to the same checkout, and a Contact support button. Sent while the intent is still warm.

    Example message

Hi Priya, you left Olive Linen Shirt, size M in your cart. It is still saved at ₹2,499. Tap below to finish your order.

    Buy nowContact support

Marketing category, because it exists to make a sale that has not happened yet.

    • PaysJourney ends. No further reminder is sent.
    • RepliesThread moves to the shared inbox with the cart attached.
  2. +24 hours

    Reminder two: answer the objection

    Marketing · ₹0.8631

The cart is still saved. This is the send that should clear whatever stopped them: shipping time, sizing, or whether COD is available.

    cart_recovery_2
    Example message

Hi Priya, your cart is still saved. If something was unclear about sizing, delivery time or COD, just reply and we will answer it.

    Buy nowContact support

The send that should clear the objection, not repeat the first message.

  3. +48 hours

Reminder three: last call, no invented discount

    Marketing · ₹0.8631

Final reminder with Buy now and Contact support. The shipped template carries no discount code, deliberately: a discount in the sequence teaches repeat buyers to abandon on purpose.

    cart_recovery_3
    Example message

Last reminder, Priya. Olive Linen Shirt, size M is still held at ₹2,499. We release it back to stock after today.

    Buy nowContact support

No discount code. A predictable discount here teaches repeat buyers to abandon on purpose.

    • No replySequence closes. The customer stays in the audience, not the ladder.

Highlighted values in the previews are pulled from the Shopify order, so every message carries that customer’s own name, order number and amount.

Rates are Meta’s own India per-delivered-message prices, billed by Meta to your account. TopEdge adds no markup on them.

Why this journey exists

Cart abandonment is not a WhatsApp problem, it is an ecommerce constant. The reason to answer it on WhatsApp in India is read speed, and the reason to measure it is that the sends cost money.

Why cart recovery is a marketing template, and what that costs

This is the part most comparisons skip. A cart reminder is promotional: it exists to make a sale that has not happened, so Meta categorises it as marketing, at ₹0.8631 a delivered message in India rather than the ₹0.1150 a utility message costs. There is no wording that gets a cart reminder reclassified, and a platform promising otherwise is describing a template that will be rejected or re-categorised later.

Three sends is therefore about ₹2.59 per abandoned cart. On a ₹2,499 order at a 10% recovery rate, that is ₹25.90 spent to recover ₹2,499 of revenue. The maths is comfortable, which is exactly why the discipline matters: a fourth and fifth send will not break the budget, but they will damage the quality rating that decides your messaging limits.

What separates a sequence that compounds from one that gets throttled

Do this

  • Send the first reminder inside 30 to 60 minutes, while the decision is still live
  • Carry the product image and the ₹ total, so the message is about their cart and not about you
  • Drop the customer out of the sequence the moment they pay or reply
  • Keep the Contact support button on every step
  • Measure sent to read to clicked to paid against Shopify orders, not opens

Avoid this

  • A fourth and fifth reminder, which costs quality rating and buys little
  • Discounting in reminder one, when the shopper only wanted a shipping answer
  • Inventing a discount code the store has not actually created
  • Running the ladder against numbers that never opted in
  • Treating a high read rate as success when no order followed

Questions teams ask

How many WhatsApp cart recovery messages should I send?
Three across about 72 hours is the shipped ladder and it is where most Indian D2C stores land. Beyond that the extra sends cost quality rating faster than they earn orders, and quality rating decides how many messages Meta lets you send at all.
What does a WhatsApp cart recovery sequence cost?
Cart reminders are marketing-category templates, which Meta prices at ₹0.8631 per delivered message in India. Three sends is roughly ₹2.59 per abandoned cart, billed by Meta to your own account. TopEdge adds no markup on that.
Does the customer keep getting messages after they pay?
No. Payment ends the journey, and so does a reply, which moves the thread into the shared inbox with the cart attached instead of leaving automation talking over a human conversation.
Can I add a discount code to the last reminder?
You can, but the shipped template deliberately does not carry one. A predictable discount at step three teaches repeat customers to abandon on purpose, and it trains your own margin away. Clear the objection first and keep the discount for a campaign you control.
Is WhatsApp cart recovery better than Shopify abandoned cart email?
They do different jobs. Shopify recovery emails work on the Online Store and Buy Button channels and need an email address, which COD-heavy Indian catalogs often do not collect. WhatsApp is read faster and works off the phone number. Most stores run both and let WhatsApp take the first few hours.
